Real Estate Appraiser Information for the State of New York

Real estate appraisers are required to be licensed, per Title XI of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act (FIRREA) of 1989.  This act required that each of the states establish an agency for the licensure, certification, and regulation of appraisers.

In New York, the NYS Department of State Division of Licensing Services is in charge of this oversight.

There are four classifications of real estate appraiser in the State of New York.  These classifications are:

  1. State Licensed Real Estate Appraiser Assistant (Trainee)
  2. State Licensed Real Estate Appraiser
  3. State Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser
  4. State Certified General Real Estate Appraiser

Those new to a career in real estate appraisals must begin as a State Licensed Real Estate Appraiser Assistant (Trainee).  There is no experience required.  However, it is necessary to complete the state required coursework to become a State Licensed Real Estate Appraiser Assistant.  The trainee must then work under a supervisor for a specified number of hours in order to be eligible to become a licensed or certified appraiser.
