Real Estate Appraiser resources for Iowa

Real Estate Appraiser Information for the State of Iowa

Real estate appraisers are required to be licensed, per Title XI of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act (FIRREA) of 1989.    This act required that each of the states establish an agency for the licensure, certification, and regulation of appraisers.

In Iowa, the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau (PLB) is in charge of this oversight.

There are three classifications of real estate appraiser in the State of Iowa.  These classifications are:

  1. Associate Appraiser
  2. Certified Residential
  3. Certified General

Those new to a career in real estate appraisals must begin as a Associate Appraiser (trainee).  There is no experience required.  However, it is necessary to complete the state required coursework to become a Associate Appraiser.  The associate must then work under a supervisor for a specified number of hours in order to be eligible to become a licensed or certified appraiser.
