Real Estate Appraiser resources for Pennsylvania

Real Estate Appraiser Information for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

Real estate appraisers are required to be licensed, per Title XI of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act (FIRREA) of 1989.  This act required that each of the states establish an agency for the licensure, certification, and regulation of appraisers.

In Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State Board of Certified Real Estate Appraisers is in charge of this oversight.

There are three classifications of real estate appraiser in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  These classifications are:

  1. Appraiser Assistant (Trainee)
  2. Certified Residential Appraiser
  3. Certified General Appraiser

Those new to a career in real estate appraisals must begin as a Appraiser Assistant (Trainee).  There is no experience required.  However, it is necessary to complete the state required coursework to become a Appraiser Assistant.  The trainee must then work under a supervisor for a specified number of hours in order to be eligible to become a certified appraiser.
