Real Estate Appraiser Information for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Real estate appraisers are required to be licensed, per Title XI of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act (FIRREA) of 1989. This act required that each of the states establish an agency for the licensure, certification, and regulation of appraisers.

In Massachusetts, the Office of Consumer Affairs & Business Regulation (OCABR), Board of Registration of Real Estate Appraisers is in charge of this oversight.

There are four classifications of real estate appraiser in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. These classifications are:

Appraiser Trainee
State Licensed Appraiser
Certified Residential Appraiser
Certified General Appraiser

Those new to a career in real estate appraisals must begin as a Appraiser Trainee. There is no experience required. However, it is necessary to complete the state required coursework to become a Appraiser Trainee. The trainee must then work under a supervisor for a specified number of hours in order to be eligible to become a licensed or certified appraiser.
