Continuing education (CE) is an ongoing requirement for real estate appraisers set by the Appraiser Qualifications Board (AQB). The purpose is to ensure that appraisers stay up to date on changes within the appraisal profession and to promote training on appraisal topics of interest.
Fortunately, the continuing education requirement is significantly less time consuming than qualifying education. This amounts to only 28 hours of CE courses every two years. 7 of those hours must be the 7 hour National USPAP Update Course.
A licensed or certified appraiser knows the academics and has the experience necessary to be a capable appraiser. However, regulations change, so the USPAP update course is important confirm those changes are communicated and clarified. Additionally, every appraiser has opportunity to expand or improve their appraisal knowledge, so the remaining 21 hours of elective courses provide that opportunity.
Another major difference between the continuing education requirement and qualifying education, is that there is no testing required for CE courses. Completion of the CE requirement is satisfied by taking the necessary number of hours in state approved courses.
